The Story behind the photo

Look up. The laurel forest looks back.

Most people walk through Madeira's Laurisilva with their eyes ahead - following the path, watching their footing on the mossy ground. But lie on your back beneath one of these ancient trees and everything changes. The canopy becomes a labyrinth. Branches coil and twist against a ghostly, mist-filtered sky, reaching in every direction with a kind of wild, unplanned intelligence. It stops being a forest and starts being something else entirely.

That feeling is what this image is about. The twisting forms, the weight of the branches overhead, the mist softening everything beyond them into pale light. Something ancient and alive, looking back at you.

Photographed in Madeira's UNESCO World Heritage Laurisilva forest.

Here’s what makes each print special:

  • Ink: Canon Lucia Pro Pigment Inks

  • Printer: Canon imagePROGRAF PRO Series

  • Paper: Fotospeed NST Bright White 315 Signature Paper – a gorgeous 315gsm matte paper made from 100% cotton rag, with a soft, natural texture. It’s Fine Art Trade Guild–approved and, with these inks, is designed to last over 85 years.

The listed size is the paper size. Each print has a thin white border on the top, left and right, with a deeper white border on the bottom for signing and numbering. This means it’s easy to trim for US-standard frames. Prints are unframed and unmounted – this way, you can choose a frame that suits your home or workspace perfectly.

The Print

This photograph is part of a limited edition of just 35 prints, split between:

  • A3 (297 x 420 mm (11.7 x 16.5 inches))– 20 prints

  • A2 (420 x 594 mm (16.5 x 23.4 inches)) – 15 prints

Each one is a hand-signed archival giclée print that I create myself in my home studio. I only sign and number a print once I’m completely happy with the quality, and every order comes with a certificate of authenticity – my personal seal of approval.
