The Story behind the photos

Madeira's Laurisilva is not a place you understand in a single image.

It is too old for that, too layered, too alive in too many directions at once. A forest that has been growing, undisturbed, since before humans set foot on the island, shaped by Atlantic mist and volcanic rock and millions of years of its own quiet logic.

To walk through it is to feel, very clearly, that you are the newest thing in it.

The Laurisilva Collection is three attempts to capture what that feels like.

The first, Cathedral of Moss, finds one of the forest's elders at rest. Its trunk rises from a cathedral of moss-covered roots, arching overhead in a vast, unhurried curve. The mist softens everything behind it. The ferns sway.

The second, Medusa's Grove, asks you to stop and look up. Seen from below, the canopy becomes something else entirely. A labyrinth of coiling, moss-covered branches reaching in every direction against a ghostly, mist-filtered sky.

The third, The Fracture Point, is the forest at its most dramatic. A single ancient trunk that at a certain height simply splits, exploding outward into a tangle of branches each as thick as a young tree in its own right, the moss following every contour, every curve, every fracture point. It doesn't feel like a tree. It feels like an event.

Together they tell a story that neither words nor a single photograph can quite manage on its own.

Individually striking. Together, unforgettable.

Here’s what makes each print special:

  • Ink: Canon Lucia Pro Pigment Inks

  • Printer: Canon imagePROGRAF PRO Series

  • Paper: Fotospeed NST Bright White 315 Signature Paper – a gorgeous 315gsm matte paper made from 100% cotton rag, with a soft, natural texture. It’s Fine Art Trade Guild–approved and, with these inks, is designed to last over 85 years.

The listed size is the paper size. Each print has a thin white border on the top, left and right, with a deeper white border on the bottom for signing and numbering. This means it’s easy to trim for US-standard frames. Prints are unframed and unmounted – this way, you can choose a frame that suits your home or workspace perfectly.

The Prints

These photographs are part of a limited edition of just 35 prints, split between:

  • A3 (297 x 420 mm (11.7 x 16.5 inches))– 20 prints

  • A2 (420 x 594 mm (16.5 x 23.4 inches)) – 15 prints

Each one is a hand-signed archival giclée print that I create myself in my home studio. I only sign and number a print once I’m completely happy with the quality, and every order comes with a certificate of authenticity – my personal seal of approval.
