Cathedral of Moss

The Story behind the photo

Walking into the Laurisilva for the first time, you understand immediately that you are somewhere genuinely old. Not old in the way of buildings or ruins, but old in a way that has no human reference point. The moss is everywhere. The air is cool and still. The trees have had centuries to grow into whatever shapes they chose.

This one chose something extraordinary.

I found this elder on a misty morning, its trunk rising from a cathedral of moss-covered roots before arching dramatically overhead. The mist softened everything beyond it into pale light, isolating the tree against the forest like a portrait. I stood there for a long time before I raised the camera, in awe of where I was.

This image is an attempt to bring that feeling home.

Photographed in Madeira's UNESCO World Heritage Laurisilva forest.

Here’s what makes each print special:

  • Ink: Canon Lucia Pro Pigment Inks

  • Printer: Canon imagePROGRAF PRO Series

  • Paper: Fotospeed NST Bright White 315 Signature Paper – a gorgeous 315gsm matte paper made from 100% cotton rag, with a soft, natural texture. It’s Fine Art Trade Guild–approved and, with these inks, is designed to last over 85 years.

The listed size is the paper size. Each print has a thin white border on the top, left and right, with a deeper white border on the bottom for signing and numbering. This means it’s easy to trim for US-standard frames. Prints are unframed and unmounted – this way, you can choose a frame that suits your home or workspace perfectly.

The Print

This photograph is part of a limited edition of just 35 prints, split between:

  • A3 (297 x 420 mm (11.7 x 16.5 inches))– 20 prints

  • A2 (420 x 594 mm (16.5 x 23.4 inches)) – 15 prints

Each one is a hand-signed archival giclée print that I create myself in my home studio. I only sign and number a print once I’m completely happy with the quality, and every order comes with a certificate of authenticity – my personal seal of approval.

Your print will be made to order, carefully signed, and packed by me. Because of this, please allow up to 10 working days for delivery. If you’re ordering internationally, please note that any import duties are the buyer’s responsibility – it’s worth checking what these may be in your country before purchasing.
