The Story behind the photo

Autumn arrives quietly in the Peak District.

There are no dramatic announcements, no single morning when everything suddenly turns. It happens gradually, then all at once. The bracken goes first, bleeding from green to gold to a deep, burnished copper over the course of weeks. Then the mist begins to settle more regularly, sitting low in the valleys and threading between the trees in the early hours. By the time the birch leaves start to turn, the whole landscape has shifted into something softer, warmer, more melancholy - and more beautiful - than at any other time of year.

I made this image on one of those mornings when everything aligned.

The bracken had reached its peak, that rich, russet copper that photographers chase every autumn and rarely find at quite the right moment. The silver birch trunks rose through it like pale sentinels, their bark catching the flat, mist-diffused light and glowing almost white against the warm tones around them. Beyond them, the forest dissolved into gold. The whole scene had the quality of a painting - the kind of image you look at and wonder whether the colours are real.

Here’s what makes each print special:

  • Ink: Canon Lucia Pro Pigment Inks

  • Printer: Canon imagePROGRAF PRO Series

  • Paper: Fotospeed NST Bright White 315 Signature Paper – a gorgeous 315gsm matte paper made from 100% cotton rag, with a soft, natural texture. It’s Fine Art Trade Guild–approved and, with these inks, is designed to last over 85 years.

The listed size is the paper size. Each print has a thin white border on the top, left and right, with a deeper white border on the bottom for signing and numbering. This means it’s easy to trim for US-standard frames. Prints are unframed and unmounted – this way, you can choose a frame that suits your home or workspace perfectly.

Each one is a hand-signed archival giclée print that I create myself in my home studio. I only sign and number a print once I’m completely happy with the quality, and every order comes with a certificate of authenticity – my personal seal of approval.
